SAVINGS HACK 2025: How to Get to Chichén Itzá from Cancún

Planning to visit the world wonder, Chichén Itzá, from Cancún? Here's a breakdown of three possible routes and a savings hack to enjoy the trip without overspending.

1. Free Highway Route (Not Recommended)

The first option is the free highway from Cancún to Chichén Itzá, which takes approximately 3.5 hours. However, this route is not very safe, so we don’t recommend it for travelers.

2. Toll Highway Direct Route (The Fastest)

The second option is the toll highway from Cancún to Chichén Itzá, with an estimated travel time of 2.5 hours. This route is quick and comfortable, but the cost in 2025 is $605 pesos (around $32 USD).

3. Savings Hack: Combination of Toll Highway and Free Road

If you're looking to save money, the best option is to combine the toll highway with the free road:

  • Take the toll highway from Cancún to Valladolid (cost: $385 pesos, $19 USD).
  • Before reaching Valladolid, switch to the free road to Chichén Itzá, which is safe but single-lane.
  • Total travel time: 2 hours 50 minutes.
  • Savings: $220 pesos ($11 USD) compared to the direct toll highway.

How to do it?

  1. Set your GPS from Cancún to Valladolid to take the toll highway.
  2. Before entering Valladolid, use the bypass (periférico) to exit towards the free road from Valladolid to Chichén Itzá. This segment takes approximately 50 minutes.

Tips for the Return Trip

You can use the same strategy to save on your return:

  • Set your GPS from Chichén Itzá to Valladolid and then take the toll highway back to Cancún.
If you plan to visit Mérida instead, avoid the free road from Valladolid to Mérida due to its dangerous "rollercoaster" hills and curves. Instead, opt for the toll highway, which costs $223 pesos ($11 USD).

Conclusion: Convenience vs. Savings

If convenience is your priority, the direct toll highway from Cancún to Chichén Itzá is your best bet. But if you want to save money and enjoy a safe journey, the savings hack is ideal.
