Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified, reaching Category 5 status this morning with sustained winds of 250 km/h, according to various meteorological reports. The storm continues its eastward trajectory, posing a significant risk to the Yucatán coast.
The Yucatán Peninsula, particularly its northern region, is on high alert due to the imminent arrival of severe weather conditions. Milton is currently located 240 kilometers west of Progreso, Yucatán.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has announced that the state is now under a Yellow Alert (moderate risk) for the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Lázaro Cárdenas, Cozumel, and Puerto Morelos. Additionally, a Green Alert (low risk) remains in effect for regions such as Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum, Solidaridad, and José María Morelos.
Lezama also emphasized that Milton will bring heavy rains to Quintana Roo, along with winds reaching up to 120 km/h, waves of 3 to 5 meters, and the possibility of waterspouts along the coasts of Campeche and Yucatán. In other coastal areas such as Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco, winds between 60 to 80 km/h and waves of 1 to 3 meters are expected.
In light of the hurricane's approach, a hurricane warning is in place from Celestún to Río Lagartos, Yucatán, and a watch zone extends from that point to Cancún. Authorities urge the public to stay informed through official channels, as the hurricane is expected to be near Cancún by tomorrow morning, Tuesday, October 8.
